Hello community, if you could answer my question, that would be GREAT! How can you tell if a 1970 s Lincoln Penny is large or small date? I've read a few things on how, but I would like a second opinion, so please take the time to respond, thank you! |

This has been posted many times before. Short of buying a SD and having it in hand, there are lots of photos on the net and this forum to help you out.

While most people say the biggest giveaway for a 1970 small date is the LIBERTY is faded from left to right. I personally find the date itself has the only indicator I need, and that is the relationship of the top of the 7 to the tops of the 9 and 0. Imagine a line drawn from the top of the 9 to the top of the 0. If the top of the 7 lines up with this line, then it is a small date. If the top of the 7 is below this line, then it is a large date.
That's how I can tell, and usually without magnification.

I always look at the bottom of the 7 in the date. If it is below the 0, then it's a large date. If not, then I look closer.  |

coop's answer pretty much sums it up.
on a related note, I find it strange that 70S SD are fairly plentiful on the market...every coin shop will have several, yet they are impossible to find in circulation. I've never found a single SD during roll searching and I live close to SF where S-minted lincolns still turn up somewhat frequently. I haven't kept a tab, but I've surely come across over 100 1970-S dated coins, all LD.....does anyone know at what frequency the SD was supposedly struck?

hesgut - struck at about 40-1, but many small dates ended up in mint sets. Original distribution in circulation was more like 100-1, but that was 1970 - 41 years ago. Stands to chance that most of the small dates released into circulation have either naturally attritioned out or have been found. I can remember looking in change back in the mid 1970s finding a few 70S cents per thousand, but not many more than that - even back then.
