That is too funny. Here in eastern N.C., if the wife hands one to a customer in change at her store they literally throw it down on the counter and demand a "real" dollar. I asked a lady one time why she did not want them. Her reply was that they were to heavy to carry around. I then asked her how many $1 bills she normally carried with her and she said 4 or 5. I then asked how many quarters she normally had in her possession and she laughed a little and replied at least a double hand full. I then told her that those dollars would be much lighter than all the quarters she carried. That is about the same time her smile turned to a snarl and her nose went up in the air and she walked away.

Tim, that's funny. Some folks just don't like to process a logical argument.

My bank has always had rolls of the latest Presidential dollar (P mint only) soon after they were released. But I keep asking about the Garfield dollar and they never have them. I am worried that I will not get this one, at least not from the bank at face value. And it looks like our government, in their "infinite wisdom" has done the wrong thing again and future issues won't be available at all from banks. Sigh.

Great story! I enjoy spending the dollar coins, it's amazing that so many people are clueless about them. Our work vending machine use them so I usually have a few.

I really wish more Americans would catch on to dollar coins. It would save us a fair bit of $ in the long run.

I was talking with my uncle a few months ago about coins and he mentioned the vending machines at his work kicked out all change in gold dollars. I gave him $20 to get me some and he said he picked out the best condition ones for me. I guess I will have to give him my want list and show him how do differentiate between the P & D issues. On the plus side he mentioned he tipped the bartenders with dollar coins so at least he is inadvertently keeping the hobby alive

I paid with some dollar coins at a Taco Bell and the cashier when crazy, telling me how cool they were. He had never seen one before and exchanged some dollar bills for them.
On the other hand, I paid for a pizza with a roll of half dollars and the cashier had to ask the manager if she could accept them. The manager said no. I said if you don't accept them you can keep the pizza. He grudgingly accepted them "this time only".

The post used to have the self service stamp machines in the lobby and would kick the dollars out in change...that was in the Florida panhandle, when the Sacs first came out, and there was a mixture of SBA's as well. I spent almost the three rolls over the weekend; tips at restaurants, and small purchases and got the usual strange looks. I'll pick some more up at payday (now that I know my credit union has/had them) and repeat the process to try and keep them circulating

There is koi pond in the lobby of the restaurant we went to last night. There is a sign that says "Do not put coins in the pond!" There are a lot of coins in that pond. I noticed an Andrew Jackson Presidential dollar in there, looking at bit too green for my tastes.

Ditto here. I will routinely get a $5 bill changed just to see which ones I find. I've found quite a few AU55's in there, would call them BU but since they HAVE been circulated I really can't. Seems like the vending co. is getting the latest releases to fill the change machine. I've even found some nice SBA's and SAC's there. I personally love the dollar coins, too bad people in this country are so ignorant of them and the amount the gov could save by switching to them
