Interesting. Clearly it's artificially toned, but I did not realize this was done at time to cover up an old cleaning. Glad I asked!

I agree on artificial toning. This coin also is a minor variety (Snow 5), 2 misplaced digits in denticles to left and right of 2nd 8.

Artificial Toning "may" have been utilized to cover up cleaning. Coin doctoring such as AT is also utilized to enhance visual appeal via toning to increase a coins apparent value.

interesting comments. I can see the artificial toning, but why would a high end uncirculated (mint state) coin have been cleaned?

I agree with AT and likely cleaned or polished. Quote:

It's hard to tell but there could be a touch of wear on the diamonds and the hair curls below. Anyhow, it just makes more sense to me that it was originally a AU rather than a MS. |

Wear on the feather tips is a giveaway that it is circulated. Definitely make to look like an MS/BU coin. NO chance it wouldn't get a details slab.
