As someone who was recently given a collection of old coins (not as old as yours) I decided to go through them myself. Mainly to see what was in there. I must say it was more fun than I thought it would be. As I was going through the mound of pennies when I found one I hadn't found before I'd say, "found an '11! Hadn't found of them before!" All the pennies have been sorted, now they just need counted. I didn't try to do it all in one sitting. I worked them an hour or two a night. Sometimes even taking a night off
My newbie vote is to go through them yourself.

Why bother with an expensive appraiser when there are so many smart and knowledgable people right here who would be happy to evaluate your coins if you would post only one per thread. Clear pictures of both sides of a coin will get you many replies and opinions. Ask for "Please grade and value" in your title along with the date and denomination of your coin.

It would take some effort on your part but there are people here that specialize in all manner of coinage. I'm excited for you. It's not very often you are given a gift that you can explore like that. Welcome to the Forum. You've come to a phenomenal place to share and learn. Explore and Enjoy!

Post them on here. It is a lot cheaper and you may learn some more along the way.

Question: Are the late 1700s/early 1800s silver? If so, I'd start with those, looking up values, posting them here for everyone to see. Maybe start with old silver that seems to be in good shape (not so worn). For the American cents, learn the key dates and proceed from there to share pictures! Good luck! Hope you strike it rich!

You have a good resource right here. I trust the info found on this forum more than the "professional" companies by far.

Is it bigger than a bread basket? Well that don't help - just a pic of the size of what you have may be helpful - sounds to me you are just looking to sell the whole thing for quick cash and not really care about which items may be rare and important?

There is A&D coin shop on Fulton Ave and Arden way. Both owners are members of Sac valley coin club. They are very nice gentleman and very helpful. I was told a long time ago know what you have before you sell. There is PCGS picture grading for free on there web site. There are a ton of pictures to help ID your coins possibly. Good Luck. https://www.PCGS.com/photogradeHope this helps.
