I wanted to get your opinion on this coin, is it real or counterfeit?

The motto is off. Compare the placement of trust in the motto to any genuine 1877 S example. It appears to be a counterfeit. Below is a PCGS genuine 1877 S example to compare the motto.

I'm not very familiar with these coins, but how is the motto off? I trying comparing visually, and they look the same to me? I'm always trying to learn. Thanks in advance.

Motto is definitely "off": IMN ? Extra letter between WE and TRUST? And TRUST is incorrectly placed.
It reminds me of a listing I saw where the seller had used AI to monkey with the coin image.
Whether fake or just doctored image, it's best to avoid this one.

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I am not either but did a side by side comparison with the PCGS coin provided by Slider23 and the coin in question. TRUST, that Slider23 spoke of sticks out like a sore thumb and I also noticed the mint mark style is wrong too. To me the feather design on the coin in question also look really off in comparison to the real coin.

First red flag: "Seller does not accept returns."
As noted above, the motto and mint mark are wrong.
