I'm fairly new to using this forum so apologies for any formatting or related issues but I have begun piecing together an 1883 proof set as of last year and figured it could be entertaining to share my progress. Excluding gold, this year contains the Indian Head cent, 3 cent nickel, Liberty nickel with and without cents, Shield nickel, Seated Liberty dime, Seated Liberty quarter, seated liberty half, Trade dollar, and Morgan dollar. As of the time of posting I own the 3 cent nickel, Liberty nickel without cents, Shield nickel, Seated dime, and Seated quarter, with the Indian Head cent pending sale and soon to be on the way if all goes well. Below are pictures and small notes on each -3 Cent Nickel (NGC PF66 CAM):I previously posted about the 3 cent nickel with worries that it had active verdigris or PVC and I had begun considering returning it to the seller. I opted for NCS conservation and received a straight grade so all was well on that front. The 2nd addition to the set for a price I was very happy with. -Liberty Nickel Without Cents (NGC PF65 CAM):This coin was an ebay purchase. The 3rd addition to the set -Shield Nickel (CACG PR66 "WitterBrick"):Another ebay purchase. Quite happy with this coin for the price. The 4th addition to the set. -Seated Liberty Dime (NGC PF66):A heavy toner this time. This coin is very angle and light dependent and truly comes to life under a strong lamp. A lovely original coin. I've yet to take satisfactory pictures of the mirrors on this coin so I plan to play around with axial lighting if I get the chance. The 5th addition to the set -Seated Liberty Quarter (NGC PF63):Another toner but much less so than the dime. Still learning to take pictures of this one as well but NGC did a lot of work with their setup on this one. This was the coin that started it all. Purchased on a whim at a coin show, the decision to build out an 1883 proof set from here was born. The 1st addition to the set. The Set Altogether: Once the Indian Head cent gets here any buying will significantly cool down for a while. The with cents Liberty nickel will hopefully be next and then the significantly more daunting half dollar and both dollars. I expect those largest 3 purchases to be at online auctions. ebay prices almost always seem too inflated and I would like to wait for the right coin and right price when spending so much. Thanks for viewing my post and again, apologies for any possible formatting issues or rules breaches I missed!

Lovely set, I know what you mean on those higher denomination coins, they do get pricey in higher Proof grades! Thanks for sharing it, we look forward to seeing it's completion.

First and foremost, welcome! Stunning set for sure. Was there a reason for the date choice that I missed?

First, Absolutely beautiful proof coins! So many proof coins from that era were put back into circulation during the 1893-1897 depression that finding some of the higher denominations is quite the hunt. You have a fantastic set going. Looking forward to seeing this collection as it grows!

Quote: First and foremost, welcome! Stunning set for sure. Was there a reason for the date choice that I missed? Apologies if I didnt quote reply correctly but I first purchased the quarter at a coin show and sort of fell in love with 19th century proofs from there. 1883 is an interesting year for proofs with 3 different nickel designs, the 3 cent nickel, and 2 different dollar designs. Every coin in the date is relatively affordable if not the cheapest for their respective series. A pretty perfect level of challenge for me to build one over several years!
