Okay, I've seen several comments about some halves having silver composition that aren't your typicals. I know of: 1964 and before = 90% 1965-1970 - 40% I've had bicentennials I could have SWORN were silver but threw them back because it was a bicentennial. If there are any coins besides the two types I mentioned about, could someone please help me with specifics? :) Thanks in advance  |

All I know is if you look at the rim and can't see any copper then it has a chance at being silver

Yeah, I had that with this one as well as a lighter surface color. But I'd like to know certain dates/mint stamps to look out for. Thanks for the info tho :)

There were 1976 Bicentenial Silver Half Dollars. They were from collector sets. The Silver Bicentennial Half Dollars were sold in 3-piece sets along with the Silver Clad Washington quarters and Silver-Clad Eisenhower dollars. Mintages are approximate - 11,000,000 sets were struck. They have an S mint mark on them. But there were also Copper Clad with S mint mark so you have to know what your looking at. |

There are also "s" mint proof halves that are 90% minted after 1992.

Okay, so if the bicentennial with an "S" or halves after 1992 that have an "S" keep them because they could be silver.
Am I missing any others?

Easiest way to tell if you have silver ... well provided you have some hand-to-eye coordination: Flip them.
Silver (90% and 40%) has a rich, resonant ring to it that is very distinct from its nickel-clad-copper cousin. Get them side by side and you'll hear exactly what I mean.

Wrestling, not to confuse but, halves 1992 and later S mint are both silver and non-silver lol! Just check the edge.

wrestling yea sometimes the coins do look a bit frosty dont they? I've seen alot of examples of what you mean, sometimes the bicentennial rims are so dirty you cant tell or even see the mintmark , then I just do what steve said. I guess with your bad skunk streak youre not used to silver, or forgot what it looks like! hahaha

Tis true M0nks... I've been finding a lot of silver pennies lately.... then I realize they're copper. What does silver look like? lol
Naw, I get a couple silver dimes here and there... Halves just aren't working for me though lol
