So my wife has been playing really nice with me and my new hobby. She has even been checking her change for me too. Today during the Pats game (thank you Billy Cundiff) she laid out the 56cents she got back from Walmart on the table and looked it over while asking "did I get anything good? oh, wait this one is new looking and it's from 1980. Is that good?" I quickly looked over and saw the coin she was talking about. It was a 1980s proof Lincoln Cent. Although this isn't a major find, I'm just excited that my wife found it. She got pretty excited when she saw that I liked the coin, and even more excited that she found a proof in circulation before I did. All of a sudden she was eager to learn what the difference between a proof and regular coin is, and I couldn't be happier! I now have a second eye out there for me! Anyone else got any good stories about your wife's (or non collecting husband, brother, other family members, etc)contributions to your collection? I would love to hear!

I have never had my wife 'off side' when it comes to collecting. I comprehensively negated any opposition she may have had before we married. I had quite a large collection of gold coins and ancients, with quite a few significant rarities.
Sold the lot to raise a deposit for our first house in Sydney, which amounted to about 20% of the total value of the house. None of those rarities could be replaced. That was in 1976.
Naturally she was happy; she had a house which she could call 'hers'.
Only a couple of years after we married, I started buying coins from London again, sometimes sending as much as $3,000 (in 2012 dollar values). She was perfectly happy about that. We paid the house off in 1987.
We are still married, we still live in the house, and my current collection is bigger than the first.
And she doesn't mind one scrap whatever I spend on coins!

My wife appreciates collecting coins as well, and supports me in what ever direction I go Numismatically. Sounds like you have yourself a great wife! Down with the 49'ers! I just, well, glad they did not make it...I'm a Lions fan!

I'm a Cheeseheads fan. Sad. They didn't make it either.
Oh well, I am also a Manchester United fan. I went to a few of their home matches, when I used to live in Manchester.
Actually Manchester has two 'Old Traffords', the other is the home of the Lancashire Cricket Club, where they play test matches.
I worked in the Bouough of Stretford Council offices, and I could see directly into the Cricket Ground from my workbench. Saw England vs. India, and England vs Pakistan test Matches, without leaving my workstation!

My Co-worker is also a Manchester United fan! Wow. I'll pass it on mate! Yeah, Greenbay. Another Co-worker was at the game. 19 degrees F or -07 C at kickoff!

Good for you (and her) on your proof circulation find. I have over the years found quite a few proofs but never a cent.

My wife is pretty good about my collecting habits as long as I'm not working on it all the time when I'm home. She always saves her change for me to go through. We used to live near her parents and they would save their change as well and let me go through it. When we went back to WA to visit them at Christmas, they had several jars of coins they had saved for me to go through. I actually found a few wheets and 3 2009 nickels.

My wife is very slowly coming around to my coin collecting habits, at least she thinks some are "pretty". But she would still prefer a common BU Mercury dime to a VG 1877 IHC, so she has a ways to go At least she humors my activities and has even gone to a coin show while we were on vacation, mainly so she could poke fun at me and my piers though. Nice find on the proof Lincoln. Proof coins in circulation are an enigma to me.

Quote:It was a 1980s proof Lincoln Cent... Although this isn't a major find, I'm just excited that my wife found it In my opinion, any proof found in circulation is cause for celebration. You have saved it from an unwarranted death! My only circulation found proof was actually discovered by my wife in her grocery store change.

I've got my sister, my mother, and my husband all saving their change for me to search through. In my sister's change I found a 1940 cent. She doesn't look at the dates...and I found a 1960 cent on her garage floor ...and a plastic (no kidding)cent as well as a double-headed trick quarter.
My mother... well, she's always sort of rolled her eyes when I start talking about coins but I picked up an old WWII ration book at a coin club meeting just to take to her so we could look over it together. She remembered those. So the next time I saw her she pulled out this 'weird' nickel. It was a Westward Journey nickel and she wanted to know what it was and whose picture is that supposed to be? LOL She's 80 and I'll bet she quit looking at her change closely when she got bifocals 30 years ago. So we had a nice talk about new nickels.

Some wives are just happy that their fellas are not wasting their money on booze or gambling, or worse, drugs.

I have been with my wife, VACookey, for 6 years. It took me 5 years to get her interested, but once I did, watch out! She is as into this as me now. Just read the 32D thread and you will see. LOL So I count myself as very lucky.
