I've travelled to several countries over the years and there aren't very many that use coins as currency anymore. It seems reasonable to assume that Canada will remove the nickel, then the dime and so on as time marches on (Probably sooner than we suspect :).

Hope I'm not violating any rules by mentioning (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com, that is my guide for copper and nickel coinage. I remove them before it is all steel plated or discontinued. Just pocket change though, have a couple of coffee cans worth of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters...as long as they are copper/zinc or nickel.

"I can't see the 2012 penny (magnetic or non-magnetic) ever being worth anything other than face value or the price of the material its made from. It has been hoarded by the case the moment it was produced"

Although there have been alot of rolls and boxes hoarded. I think the magnetic ones will be worth more in the future. 2012 Magnetics were produced in January and February of 2012. They didnt announce the end of the penny until March. Most Magnetics went into circulation because at the time no one knew it was the end of the penny. I think its pretty cool to own a sealed box 2012 pennies. 30 years down the road I will give them to my grandkids.

However, the RCM minted millions of them and many have been saved. The situation is similar to the 2009-P nickel and the Lincoln Presidential cent of late 2009 down here in the States. It seems like most of them were pulled from circulation as soon as they were issued and the hoarders are selling them at a premium.

I want at least one box but my problem is that I live in Florida and I only want to pay face value for them I don't want to spend double on them like how they are on ebay. I guess I'm going to have to try and find a box at a coin show.

Most of the time I can tell by the overall appearance ;) I wouldn't like to be without my magnet though, and I double check every penny for which there might be reason, even if I'm sure which type it is.

I guess the different planchet types respond differently to either the plating or striking processes, or both. It's hard to describe the differences in appearance, but test enough of them with a magnet and you'll notice the differences. One of the most common penny types I check magnetically is the 2006 no logo no P. Every one I've tested so far has been non-magnetic, but I also haven't been surprised. I'm guessing when/if I finally do find a magnetic 2006 no logo no P, I'll have a pretty good idea that it's magnetic before testing it.

I checked 50 some 2006 no logo no P on the weekend, none were magnetic :(
I'm going to put most of these 2006's back into circulation and let another collection pick them up and test them :P

I know what you mean Voshus007. I, as an American, only have a few rolls of canadians. Thats not too bad given they are all from U.S. circulation though. I looked up the price of canadian pennies on ebay this week, and noticed the prices of them have skyrocketed already.

Yeah, cdn pennies. 15 boxes from my branch (5/week)then I have three other relatives who have agreed to obtain 5 boxes each from their branches.

Normally we'd grab a box per week to CRH and have built a good relationship with the staff. When I was last there, they were out so I discussed the upcoming deadline (Feb 4) and if I could make a bulk order. We agreed that 5 boxes on each of the next 3 fridays would work well for both of us.

The last two boxes we obtained were full of mint wrapped 2012's (mostly magnetic).

I find they looks at me funny everytime I go to the bank and ask for rolls. Especially when I bring rolls to exchange for rolls.
