Trying to figure out whether or not I should keep this. Would appreciate any thoughts.

It weighs in at 28.03g (KM says 28.06), so I attribute the .03g to wear?

Has a diameter of 40.1 or so, with one area about 39.7. Expected variance due to the raised edges I believe.

Concerns: MOTTI is very hard to read and very close to the edge. Mint mark of R isn't right, seems like the die moved during minting maybe?

Will take some better photos tonight, here is what I took so far:

I am cautious about stating coins are fake. I had been told that this coin was restruck with the correct edges(Note: a Restrike isn't a fake but a restrike isn't origional!) I had heard one way to identify the restrike was to look at the Letter R under the eagle! if it looks like a "K" then it is more likely to be a restrike.

I am not fully confident on this info and I am posting it only to give you more info to check out.

Sorry, but this is a modern re-strike rather than an original coin. As austrowiki mentioned, the incompletely struck R is a definitive diagnostic of the copies. You can find plenty of them on ebay, often coming from eastern Europe.

I check out my coin and find it is 100% the same. Do anyone know it was a contemporary counterfeit that had been circulating or it is a modern forgery for cheating coin collectors? The two phenomena are quite different?

The Italians re-struck the coin in the 1950s-1960s using the original but degraded dies. the re-strikes were made targeting coin collectors

But should we have a real one "mint mark R" showed before we conclude it is a counterfeit? I have searched in ebay and MA shops but each same coin has a "incomplet" R as the mint mark. I still not sure the coin showed here is a restrike!

I tend to agree but out of self interest , no one likes to think they have been duped. I have a similar coin but the signature is well struck. I am not prepared to outright claim mine is original nor to say it is one of the re-strikes. All I can say is I am doubtful about it. I have seen examples with the complete "R" and signature, they usually sell for very high prices( that said mine wasn't cheap and was purchased in Addis Abbaba). I am more suspicious about the one pictured in this thread. The "R" is considerably more degraded than mine and likewise the signature. all that said all I can confidently say is that I am doubtful

Edit: looking at the last photo(BTW those photos are most helpful) the apparent wear on the coin seems to me to be more indicative of die wear.

Wong - the "complete" R can be confused with the incomplete one, so your coin may be just fine. The complete are looks more like an H with a thin line connecting the top bars to form an R, it does not look like a standard letter R. But on these re-strikes, both the top thin like and virtually the entire top half of the letter is missing.

Your coin looks pretty good, somewhat a late die state, but the letters are not as flared as you find on the re-strikes. The more recent issues also have a lopsided bottom loop of the 8 in the date, as on the OP's coin, but your coin has a normal rounded one.
