I recently got this 3 cent piece and I'm wondering what's going on with it. I got five other 3 cents with this one and this is the only one that looks like this. Is it some kind of error or just a damaged coin?
This coin appears to suffer from corrosion and an attempt to remove the corrosion with harsh chemicals or acid. There are some raised areas on the obverse that don't look like the normal die cracks that are common with this issue. The top one looks like a lamination (peeling), but there is something else going on there.
I see a rim Cud around 11 o'clock on the reverse. I think it probably spent some time in a rusty can then someone tried to clean the rust off of it. I love the coin though!
Pics aren't quite clear enough to tell, but there almost seems to be spark erosion artifacts on both faces. Makes me wonder, as do both of the anomalous spots on the obverse at Noon and 4:00, and the date. It's enough to continue looking and reserve judgement for the moment.
