1980 D/S Over Mint Mark - Coin Community Forum

300 coin guy Valued Member United States 176 Posts	Posted 03/31/2008 7:54 pm Hello, I just found the very RARE 1980 D/S over mint mark, and here I just learned that it was debubked and the cause of it was die GOUGES!...Well let me tell you I looked at this coin for sometime and studied it and to me it is not die GOUGES,,,It really is the S mint mark there and to me it is not the die GOUGES like they said it is. If anyone in here has found a speciem to look at you will see what I am taking about, it has to be a good one so you could really see the S mint mark good. The one I found is AU 58, which is good from circulation. Please give me your feed back on this topic so I could see what you think about it. Thank you, 300 coin guy Report this Post to the Staff

Through careful analysis of this specimen, and a sharing of thoughts between six different experts in the field, we all agreed that this was the result of die damage - not a simple die gouge. At any rate, it is indeed not an S mintmark. All of us want to believe it is, but the proof is right there on the coin - it cannot be, no matter how much we want it to be.
