I think it's unusual for just the central field of a coin to be doubled, but given my limited knowledge and experience I may be off-base. Having just the central design doubled isn't unusual, blank dies are cone-shaped and the prevailing theory for these doubled dies is that the die was misaligned during the first hubbing but was caught before it was fully hubbed. That way only the central part of the design was hubbed in misaligned. The US Cent doubled ears are a good example of this. Report this Post to the Staff
