Here is a way to take decent pictures for very little money.

And you might be able to get around using the LED ring light - though its very convenient. When I bought mine two year ago it was 2.99 or so on eBay. Recent economic trends make it over 8.00 now But it works well (USB rechargeable).

In the setup you can see the REV side of the coin being photographed, and that photo is included below (after being cropped) in this post.

Note the bottle cap is essential to force the camera to auto focus on the coin.
Note the timer is essential for a crisp image.

Adjusting number of books to find a height where the coin fills the screen is a good idea rather than using zoom just b/c zoom may add pixellation.

Darth Morgan initially came up with a post, years ago, on using an iphone for taking good pictures. He used 6 IKEA LED gooseneck lamps for his lighting. I do not even know if ring lights such as this one were available back then.

Not bad, but the photos are a bit dark.

I'm impressed! I'm too lazy to go to this much trouble.

Yeah...I should have clicked the button to turn the light on higher level...but had forgotten I could do so until well after I was done!

Great results! Since almost everyone has a phone, books, and bottle caps, hopefully your method will help with the images posted here. That ring light looks like it should work well, too, especially for circulated coins.

Here you go. From the box the linked one appears to be packaged in, this is the exact ring light I got when they were just ~3.00 two years ago (now 7.90 & free shpping).

This link is also the best price I found on ebay with a North American search (similar prices for China search also - but no long wait on the shipping this way):

Its an iPhone 7 that I got used off of ebay a couple years ago. It was cheap b/c it cannot make calls, but I don't use a cell phone for calls anyway.

If you have a cell phone, this will likely work. Even pics with my old iPhone 4S are not too bad, but the smaller megapixel rating of the camera does not make pictures as sharp.
