hi!
I got some uncleaned coins..and after cleaning them I am trying to guess what they are. here is one:

I think it is: Antiochos IX Eusebes Philopator Kyzikenos (114-95 BC) 18
or basically a bad version of this coin:

Am I right? if not can you give me a hint of what it is? Thanks!!

Searching VCoins can be helpful. But there are many other sites, some really extensive, that are probably more useful. Perhaps the most important thing is knowing how to search, what terms to use for the coin you have.

@wst, I agree with @bob that having the correct search terms is absolutely key. You may also like using acsearch.com as a source for information.

Thanks all! problem is the letters on the coins.. are really in the English alphabet.. so I dont know how to type them in, to search on them.. plus there might be a guy on the coin.. but since I don't know who he is in the first place.. I don't know to search on him. But then again.. its adds to the fun! like solving a mystery..

Yes the letters are Greek of course on this coin. I was more thinking that knowing to use the search term THUNDERBOLT is most important.

If you are completely at a loss, just try a few searches on Google images for what you can see + "coin", and scroll through to see anything that comes close. The details of that coin will then give you some terms to try, like the ruler or the city, and an idea of which more specialist site to search.
