Hi. I inherited my grandmother coin collection and while I've learned alot, these two coins. One is a 69s that appears to have doubling, but I think surely it's not...lol. The 41 nickel is just a compler4 headscratcher. What is goin on with it? And it looks like something is going on under the date as well. Thanks for any help. And sorry the pics are not of better quality. *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

The cent is a nice example of MD=machine doubling but no added value. The nickel is PMD=post mint damage. John1

Just Machine Doubling on the 1969-S. Note the mintmark and the date are affected at the same angle. On the 1969-S DDO, there should be no doubling on the mintmark. Common Machine Doubling on the 1968-1972 cents. The difference? A doubled die comes from a doubled, die. Machine Doubling is caused by the machine. While you can have a doubled die with Machine Doubling, Machine Doubling never creates a doubled die. Only a doubled die can create a doubled die coin. Examples of the DDO on the date with Machine Doubling: Note the date doubling? Note the mintmark is not doubled, but the yellow arrows are showing Machine Doubling on a doubled die. But on the big DDO, the doubling is huge on the other devices a lot stronger: So on your coin it is Machine Doubling. Not a doubled die. There are probably less than 50 if the huge DDO, while probably more than 50% (or more) coins showing Machine Doubling. Your coin is the common machine doubled coin. The nickel was altered, no premium for this altered coin. CoopHome: Why are there more coin machine doubled, than the 1969-S DDO-001 doubled die? Machine Doubling is a common striking event. a doubled die comes from a doubled die. because they caught this DDO early, there are only a few of the coins that got out in circulation

The plug seems to be silver, that's a plus. I bet it has something to do with the saying "plugged nickel" John1

But it was not silver that year. (note the mintmark) So it is just a damaged nickel.

for future referemce, pics that fit on the typical display, maybe 1000 pixels wide, are better since they are less blurry and easier to examine

Thanks everyone! Pretty much what I was thinking. I didn't realize what the plug in the nickel was. Interesting that it's plugged with a quarter. Why anyone would do that is beyond me.
Lastly, did anyone have a chance to look closely at the date on the nickel? I swear it looks like it's stamped over something.
Thanks for all the welcomes!

@kci, first welcome to CCF. Second, that plug came from a silver Half Dollar (not a silver Quarter). I would definitely keep that piece in a 2x2 for safekeeping not because it is valuable, but rather for the novelty.

I never had a plug nickel before - That one is a nice one. I think the OP should have put these 2 coin into their own separate topics. That cent is not getting much attention here.
