I was doing some housecleaning and found 2 counterfeit coins I no longer want. I have a large cent and a WLH.

i would be happy to use the large cent for educational purposes. I do some local lectures, teach a class on early copper for the ANA and also do a counterfeit detecting/grading seminar for the EAC conventions.

another option to consider is donating them to the ANA. as a charitable donation it would allow you to write some of the purchase price off of your taxes. they will provide you with a receipt.
I collect low grade large cents. I currently have >230 Sheldon varieties and >235 middle date Newcomb varieties.

@CarrsCoins, I was told this was counterfeit by a large cent collector/dealer. He said the telltale sign is the small lump at the bust over the 1.

Picture of the obverse might help. According to this Jack Young article https://coinweek.com/counterfeits/i...ounterfeits/ the divot in the E in CENT on reverse is also a marker for this family of counterfeits. He hangs out over on CT so find the thread there on this topic.

No doubt they are both counterfeits, I hope you didn't buy them.

They were both in group lots that I won in auction. They were never taken into consideration while bidding. I put strong bids in on the items that I wanted.

My extensive 'black' collection of over 100 fake and counterfeit pieces is an essential tool for my own education, in how to identify them much more easily the the time of purchase, when I only have my skill and visual memory to help me.

OK to build such a collection, provided that each piece is acquired at their true (very low) value.

Another reason why I always like to closely examine each coin in hand, before deciding to buy.

Recently, had an ancient coin examined under an electron microscope, with attached XRF, not because I doubted it, but because it had no provenance.
