Under close examination I see scrapes across Lincoln's cheek and neck area. What do you suppose the cause is?

Hmm they look a bit like roller lines, but I'm not sure. I'm interested to see what others think.

That is an area where die clashes happen:

Also note the obverse die is slight out of alignment. (MAD Mis-Aligned Die) Making the clash mark even closer to the affected area during a clash. Just a die event.

I am not seeing a die clash. Roller lines is the first thing that came to my mind.

Yeah I'm not completely on board with this being a die clash either as these lines are on a part of the design which would be way down in the die. Don't we predominantly see clashes on the flat fields surrounding design elements?

OT question for all. Is the Obverse off enough to be considered "Off Center"?

@twi, yes good catch. Since only one side is off center, this is called a mis-aligned die. Normally, we advise folks that there is only a numismatic premium when some of the letters start to fall off the edge. Of course keep this one if you want until a more dramatic example comes along.

Not an off center. Note the reverse is normal. It is a MAD coin, but not enough to be collectable. (MAD = Mis-Aligned-Die) The setup of the location of the obverse die was not exactly over the reverse die. Thus the rim is not formed correctly on only one side of the coin. They are collectable when the devices are seen falling over the edge of the coin:

How can you tell when they are collectable? When the devices fall over the edge, there will be a weakness seen on the opposite side of the coin:

CoopHome: What is a MAD coin? How does this happen? miss-alignment of one die will make the obverse/reverse not over the opposite die. thus one side is affected. this can happen on both dies, but the miss alignments will be different than an off center strike. (rare)

The reverse is centered, making the obverse a MAD Strike.
as for the lines, I'm with the others for them being roller lines.

Thanks guys for all the responses! The coin is a little MAD. Does that account for the lines across the face and neck area?
