Probably heavily cleaned at some point.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Could have been a dug coin then harshly cleaned with abrasives

Dug coins usually are glossy and terminal dark in color. Perhaps this coin suffered severe PVC damage? I see a remnant of green on both sides. The woodgrain coloring is very natural for this series, especially those dated from the 1870s.

I thought the color looked pretty normal. Liberty is clearly visible, but the lack of definition everywhere else is odd. I have several dug coins and they don't look like that, at least the ones I have.

So who is this Dug guy, anyway?
;-)
It does have that look about it, maybe in conjunction with some kind of wood grain/roller marks situation. Decent details considering any of that.
