I bought this Peace dollar online for $45. The scratch on the observe was not visible on the pic when I bought it. It's irritating to get it in and immediately see that. I'm thinking of returning due to the irritation, but it wasn't expensive. What do y'all think? Edit: One pic did show the mark, but not as pronounced as it is in hand, in my opinion. If the seller pics were deceptive, then I'd return it. That would bother me to no end.

Right - your eyes will go right to that scratch everytime you look at the coin - I'd return it for and look for a problem free coin. Plus selling a scratched coin is a pain because you always have the possibility of it being returned.

Festus, if you're not happy with your purchase, by all means return it. You'll never feel joy looking at it, and that's reason enough to send it back.

Where'd you buy it? I'd probably return it as well.

I bought it on ebay. And it's a really nice coin in hand, but for the scratch.

I'd return it, if you don't like it. The scratch is very distracting in my opinion.

Quote: I bought it on ebay. And it's a really nice coin in hand, but for the scratch. I viewed the listing and there is an ebay policy violation by revealing the MS63 grade on a holder that is not approved. That said the coin is likely still worth over $30 and if you pay the return shipping it's almost a toss-up on the return. You could contact the seller and express your concern and see if they are willing to pay for the return. It's probably not worth a SNAD claim because the scratch does show up in one image even though it doesn't look as bad as your images show. Whatever you decide it's not worth getting upset about, most of us have done a lot worse on purchases. In the future avoid buying coins in no-name slabs. They're really raw pieces that often lead to disappointment. Good luck.

The one pic that shows the mark doesn't do justice to how pronounced it is in hand, in my opinion. It wasn't expensive so I think I'll just stick it my collection or trade it with a local dealer. I appreciate the advice.

Although the scratch may be disappointing, you got a great deal on the coin. It has gem smoothness and would grade out 64 or 65. Worth at least what you paid, perhaps double. Looks like a keeper to me!!

OP if you don't like it, it sounds like there are multiple justifications for a "not as described" return, meaning that the seller is on the hook for the return costs and a full refund. If a dealer is willing to give you $45 for it, ok. But I wouldn't accept losing money on it, at the least I'd contact the seller and ask for a partial refund. They'll be out the shipping costs both ways if you do return it, so if they're smart they should be willing to work with you.

It looks like an ugly contact mark. Beyond that, the coin is very well struck with clean fields. An example of how good a Peace dollar can look. If it were mine I'd keep it. But then I like holed coins....

That coin has character ... she's a beauty. I kinda like the scratch :)
If I'm you, I feel the disappointment/deception, what a lesson.

The first thing I see on that coin is the scratch. You'll never be able to un-see it. If I were you, I would return it. You can find tons of other choice Peace dollars with no scratches for a few more bucks.
