What you have there is a (very) damaged "holed" 1830 Large Cent. If that chunk wasn't missing, it would be worth 54-95 dollars approximately, it's hard to assign a grade becuase the photos are hard to see so I'm guessing. As is, it's not worth much at all. biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 07/11/2009 1:27 pm About the only redeeming quality is that the hole is almost certainly vintage- it was made by a square nail. A common tradition in the 1800s was to nail a cent above the doorway to your new house as a sign of good luck. In that condition, it is considered to be a cull and only worth a couple bucks. If you shot everyone who holed an old coin 1/2 of the population of the 1800's would have been shot. Folks did that (holed coins) back then to put a piece of cloth thru the coins to hold them together. Less chance of losing them that way. Report this Post to the Staff
Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 07/13/2009 2:50 pm I got my first look at that reverse and then the obv and for a moment had a terrible feeling that this was an N-9. The reverse is right but fortunately the obv says it is a N-2. (N-2 is common, a N-9 in that condition and without the hole would be around a $15K coin. An N-9 even with that hole would probably be $1K.) I see it as sharpness of a VF-20 but with that hole and the other damage I couldn't call it better than a Fr-2. As is it's a couple bucks at best.
