I know this occasionally beaten to death but what are some of the method used by folks in here to get the black, gummy crap I find invading cents in my roll searches? I used lighter fluid for some but what do you all use?

Thanks

If it comes off in lighter fluid, it'll come off in any kind of organic solvent. That's "organic" in the chemical sense - acetone, alcohol, methylated spirits, gasoline... they'll all do much the same job. Acetone seems to work fastest. Pure acetone won't leave a residue behind, but the diluted, contaminated stuff sold as "paint thinner" and "nail polish remover" might have dissolved solids that leave a residue.

If it doesn't come off in acetone, it's probably corrosion not "gunk".

If the hot water method I outlined in your other post doesn't work, I suggest soaking in xylene next.

I have often wondered this too. I use what I thought was a very 'LOW TECH' method - a soft tooth brush and plain old bar hand soap - is this bad?

Friction on a coin, even with a soft nylon bristle toothbrush, will almost always result hairline scratches thus ruining the coin
