Thick 1947 Canadian Cent - Coin Community Forum

Jays-Dad Pillar of the Community United States 790 Posts	Posted 12/08/2009 5:11 pm I found a 1947 cent, no Maple leaf, and it is really thick. It is noticeably thicker than other cents (it just felt wrong). I have a Coinsafe coin size gauge which includes some slots for determining thickness. A variety of other Canadian cents fit into the 1.5 mm slot, but this one doesn't even come close to that slot, the coin only fits into the next available slot, which is 1.8 mm. I assume that there is variability in the thickness of the sheets used to cut planchets, but this seems really far outside the range of normal variability in thickness. It seems to have pretty high rims, despite being only a VF coin. Any idea how it might be this thick? Report this Post to the Staff
