I am looking to get a low grade Trade dollar and was hoping for some ideas of where to look. I was going to put this in the "looking to buy" section (feel free to move) but I am not necessarily looking to buy one on here, just looking to find good places to get one. I don't want to go the ebay route because of fakes etc. Do many coin shows have low grade Trade dollars or would it be better to go to a dealer (if so, are most dealers going to be able to spot fakes on Trade dollars well?). I would think fakes wouldn't be in the low grades but I am not well versed on Trade dollar fakes. I am basically looking to get a Trade dollar for my type set and only really need it to be a AG-G or so and didn't know how easy that was to come by. Thanks for any help/info. |

Quite the dilemma ace......I don't recall ever seeing one in those grades, however, I am no expert, and am a long way from having seen everything. I might think that since authenticity is your paramount concern, that you look for one that has been graded by a trustworthy TPG, in which case, ebay might be just the place to look (maybe even Heritage). Here is is fairly nice one, that might suit your purpose, I don't know what your budget is for such a thing, but this one seems to be priced right at $120 with 4 hours to go. I know it might not be easy. I saw one at a dealer for $90 (raw coin, 1877, they called Good). It was tempting.

That one on ebay was graded as VF-35, it was genuine, and free shipping. Good deal. That good coin at the dealer for $90 (not including tax I imagine), is not authenticated as being genuine, would probably never be worth your money back if you decided to resell. There is a big difference between those two coins, (in several ways). I would recommend saving up the extra $60, and get something better than raw 'good'. (Really). You will wish later that you had. |

Keep in mind there are a lot of counterfeit Trade dollars in all sorts of grades. Buyer beware. Especially on E-Bay. Edited by fcrazo

Counterfeits are the concern. I do not care about the resale of the coin too much (I plan to pass it on in the family) but I dont want a fake.

I was thinking that counterfeits in the lower grades wouldn't be prevalent, but I guess I am wrong. I just didn't want to end up spending more money ($50+ could buy another nice coin) just to get a slabbed Trade dollar when I am going to remove it anyhow, but I guess that does buy peace of mind knowing that it is real (unless the slab is faked too....) |
