Your Opinion On Seated Half Dollar

shatsi - I think an AU 58 grade is high for this one. The obverse shows enough high point wear and loss of mint luster for me to place it lower down the scale - between 50 and 55. An AU 50 has contact marks and at least 50% of luster remaining. The obverse seems to have seen more contact and loss of mint luster than the reverse. I would also expect that it has been dipped to bring up the luster.

So is it worth the asking price

One question to consider - If you were selling this coin to the same dealer what grade would he allow for it? EF ?

I am of the opinion that AU58 has to be essentially an MS63 or better type coin with some "high point" wear - a true slider - where the dealer will be calling it "Commercial MS" or MS62 or something like that.

But then again - I tend to be a bit critical.
