Please forgive me as I am not a collector by any means at all. My grandfather passed and in his will I was left some rather cool and odd things. One of which is this coin, token, whatever this is. I did a search and found your forums. I seen another user has one of these as well so I thought I would ask a few questions. One was this actually made in 1855 or was is made later as a commemorative piece? Second is there any value to is as this is the only thing like this in all of the old coins that I have here. The cool old coins are all US pieces and I can easily look them up but this thing is just odd :) Any info on this piece would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

to the Community!

As this is not an official US Commemorative issue, I moved your welcome post to the 'Tokens, Medals, and other Exonumia' forum for the proper attention.

Thanks that was a very good write up. Made be happy to have this thing. I may keep it after knowing a little about it. The coins I keep I put in protective packaging and list the current value. How can I get a current value on this thing?

J-Buck thanks for the appreciation there.. What else can I find out about this. The posting I seen here and one other is all I am finding on the net. There was an other unearth in Spring Valley NY. There is an Amazing thread at http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/t...-wilder.html I had no clue Almonzo and Laura Wilder were real people and to be honest it took quite some time for it to sink in who they were!.. OML I would love to know what this thing is worth LOL.. My kid could go to college after all :) Kidding I dont think this is going ANYWHERE NOW.

This medal seems to have appeared on ebay quite a bit, if you're looking for a range of prices.
Don't clean it, by the way! Though it looks like someone may have already shined it up...
