Just wondering why with only a few strikes that this 3" medal would show a DC in it between the S and V when struck in 1867? It's ~1/4" thick and in silver. There were also 300 pieces struck in bronze,.. and would they have used the same dies for all of the bronze and silver strikes ? Total medals would be ~ 361 . All opinions greatly appreciated ..

Thanks for that link. Yes, It's the Belzberg medal with the DC in it.
My medal has no DC.
This info shows that there were ~551 total with one made of pure gold for Victoria....

Here is a pic of mine without the DC.... and also in the presentation box. Would the gold one have been struck first..? Would the silvers have been struck after the bronze medals? With so few made, I find it hard to understand why medals with a noticeable DC would have been presented. When compared to the perfect Belzberg medal,..it looks like my medal's shovel, trident, paddle and axe got a little bit of use. .

The auction listing states that 50 silver medals were struck in 1867 and more were issued up 'til 1872.Perhaps the Belzberg medal was not one of the original presentation medals, but a later strike.

Good point DBM. Maybe that's it. It's a medal that comes up very rarely. The 1 gold must have been struck first and maybe then the 50 silver and then afterwards the remaining bronze ones. Be fun to know if any of the bronze have that DC also. Maybe they did strike a few more in the following years. ...and maybe there's another gold one tucked away in some Bank of Canada vault...? I wouldn't mind having one of each but definitely in the OE presentation case too. Maybe her great granddaughter would want to trade her gold one for something that I have ...that she might want? The Tower of London must be stuffed to the rafters and probably needs a good cleanup and/or garage sale.(here's hoping )

Thanks DBM... Very interesting re-pro of the original in that link. They just added the 1867 and 1967 in the Rev. ..and no DC in this striking. I'm surprised that they're allowed to do "knock-offs" like that. No "copy" stamped into that one either...( our ongoing copies discussion ) Would have loved to have seen the Obv of Victoria in their presentation because her portrait sits much higher than the rim of the original from 1867 as shown in my medal below.

Here is an edge-on view of this 1867 medal. Gives you a good idea about the increased height of the raised bust.

Something I'm curious about. Is this medal's obverse the first portrayal of Victoria as widow?

He passed in Dec of 1861. This medal would have possibly been commissioned in 1866 or 67 ..I'm guessing now.
Would Wyon (as engraver) had other portraits and coins or medals made between 61 to this medal date. I would guess that "yes" is a real possibility. We'd have to find other pieces from the years in between and compare.
Trust me here...your computer and skills are at least 50x faster than mine..

That is a beautiful medal. I love the veiled Victoria bust. How expensive are these silver pieces? I imagine they're hard to find. Do you have any other veiled Vitoria pieces?

The Belzberg piece sold years ago for ~$3000,.. and there was no mentions of the original case coming with it,...but then again, ..maybe it did...
I don't know about other coins or medals with this Obverse. I would think that some Canadian dealers would be able to find one,...if it was in their $interest$ to do so...
