pulled this 1965 5c coin out of a roll and noticed the rim was damaged.
Any ideas on how this happens?

Maybe the planchet was flawed?

I agree that it could be a planchet flaw. Would you be able to post pictures of the obverse and reverse? They would help in making a determination.

probably struck through debris (wire ?) This edge appears on a lot of WWII coins ............halves especially.

I think it is a planchet flaw.
