i was looking through my 1859 over 8 large cents and I noticed this one also has a repunched 5, now does this make it a 9/8 or a repunched 5 variety? can anyone id this for me? I looked on the haxby site but didnt find a match thanks

Nice find, nice coin. If it isn't on Haxby then maybe they should know about it.....they do have a number of dies identified but they also list numbers for dies that they haven't identified yet.

Doctor Haxby's site does not discuss the 9/8.

gidjit...I ran your coin through one of my software programs and the "yellow" arrows show what looks like a double "5". but what is the "red" arrow pointing to...Is there a doubling on your coin that we don't know about where the red arrow is, or is my program imaging it..?

BTW...beautiful coin...

Great work!
I agree with simple doubling on the 5 and 9.
I cannot see a 9/8.
Rob Turner's books are the ultimate guide to each and every die ever used for the 1858 and 1859 cents----but pricy, $160.

The reverse is Rob Turner's RD9.

The easiest diagnostic is the hollow of the 9.

The hollow of the narrow 9's is oval, whereas
the hollow of the 9/8's are circular.
