It happened after the strike. See how the scratch goes through the design.

How was the mark through the caribou's head created?

If you compare a standard photo, the right edge of the top bar of the 5 is typically in line with the bow of the bottom. On the coin in the photo, it's to the left of that.

So whatever dragged across the coin hit the leading edge of the 5 and was pushed up a bit, skipping over the left side of the bar. When it CROSSED the 2, it didn't jump.

Don't know, its a pretty uniform stroke and there is no marks on the 5 suggesting anything hit it. Not sure how the marks got there is directly from a mint roll.
Rest in Peace

qbvbsite...I was looking at your coin and wondering myself how a gouge could happen across the "5" and not damamge it...I ran it through my software to make it some what of a 3D effect and as you can see by the "yellow" arrow it is undamaged and the "green" arrows show a gouge...Interesting..

BStrauss3...If it skipped over the "5" it would leave a gap between the "5" and where it continued to scratch...The arrows show the gouge/scratch tight against the "5" which dosent seem right...see below.

Looks to me like the planchet was damaged prior to the coin bring struck. A legitimate error :)

My thoughts are that the scratches have extremely sharp edges------so upon the strike, material should push into the scratch cavity. This has not happened do the scratch is PMD. The 5 is a side issue because we do not know what caused the scratch.

If part of the crossbar of the 5 is missing , it is PMD.

qbvbsite...As everyone is telling you..I also think by the way the top of the "5" is intact that it was there (in the mint) before the strike...Nice keeper....

Remember, that is just my personal opinion.

gbvbsite, compare your coin to the one in this thread which has definite pre strike damage.
https://goccf.com/t/182456
Note that none of the elements are intact within or across the gouge.
Yours is the result of PMD.
Look how the caribou's eye has been pressed into the gouge.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Do you see ANY evidence of copper colour metal inside or along the gouge? Remember that this is a multi-ply plated coin, and any scratch on the surface should show the underlying copper plating.

Please post a photo of the other side.
