Please look at this overlay of 002 (used with permission). It can be found here:

I am not convinced it is a match. Neither does 003 appear to match - it is even more out of line than this one. I am being confused because there are contact marks on the MM. Also the last photo is what could be a marker for 003! I am in doubt about that, too!

in my opinion, your MM looks a little bit too high(closer to the date)

coop needs to chime in. It looks like a damaged punch because I have seen sooo many just like that and it is known there was a damaged punch used. coop knows for sure,I may be wrong it's happened once before

I'll bet I've got you beat on that one!

I am really interested to know how a damaged punch is recognized. How does one even find out that a damaged punch existed in a certain year?

1979 is notorious for a few different damaged MM punches, as it looks like more than half the cents produced that year look like an RPM. The only way I know to verify a damaged MM punch is finding BU cents in rolls or bags, finding a MM that looks like an RPM, and then determining it is NOT an RPM. If you can find another coin that matches, than I can consider it a damaged punch.

Looks like the Splits are as strong as the 1979D-1MM-002. (split upper and lower) I'm leaning towards the damaged punch issue on this one.
