mkfraser.

Looks like an abrasion at that site rubbed those two letters away. It could also be grease on the hammer die. A view of the reverse may help.

No sign of greasing on the reverse. I'm guessing a hit of some sort removed the L and I.

When you look at the 'I' on Liberty, you will see that it is a bit wider than normal and the United is a bit wider on the first letter. So I'm leaning towards a Struck Through Grease error.
