Coinfrog, I know that. I thought the "L" only appeared on the one variety of 1864.

No, the L was added partway through 1864 and continued on until the end of the series in 1909.

Correct, the "L" initial remained until the series ended.

Bad color. I'd avoid that one myself as a cleaned coin.

I have found, especially on ebay, that just because someone paid a lot for a coin don't necessarily mean it's worth a lot of money.
