I had posted earlier with info on a Half Dime that I found metal detecting. I was advised by a couple of folks to have the dime sent to ANACS to have it graded due to a small gouge on the back of the Half Dime. One guy also said to have it cleaned, but I have read many times not to have it cleaned. Is there certain cleaning that is acceptable? Should I have it cleaned, then graded? Thanks for any info.
That is easily a $500+ coin but since it was a metal detector find, there may be room for improvement in regards to the surfaces. I would recommend sending it to NCS for conservation. If the coin is deemed acceptable after conservation, then NGC can grade it. If it is deemed to have problems after the conservation(the reverse gouge, possible corrosion), then NCS would slab it and assign a details grade.
Do they dip it in something...? I have seen a lot of coins that were not worth as much, with comments like "coin cleaned". Does cleaning detract from the value, or just improper cleaning? Thnks.
