William IIIi Groat - Overdate? - Coin Community Forum

Looking at the date it seems to be an overdate - but I can find no reference of such. Would anyone know of such an overdate or is this just a feature of the initial striking.? Spence Moderator United States 34453 Posts	Posted 07/10/2026 09:13 am That is an interesting Groat @bacc. From the picture, I see two aspects of the last digit of the date which are curious. First, the knob at the tip of the step seems deformed and displaced downwards so that it contacts the loop. Second, there appears to be a lighter, loop slightly below the main loop. The two aspects may or may not be related. In the case of the latter, I think that this could mean that the 6 was restruck into the die, giving you a 1836/6. I'll be interested to see what others think. I posted it on another forum and the respondent (a very knowledgeable member) suggested that it was a 1836 / 5 as the underlying remnants fit the pattern. Apparently unrecorded, (definitely not on Numista), if that is the case. Bacchus2 Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 2897 Posts	Posted Yesterday 10:32 am Your suggestion actually made more sense as there was no issue of this type in 1835, only the different Maundy version,, however the thought is that there may have been some trial strikes in 1835 of this type, which were repurposed into the main 1836 mintage. If so, that would really be quite cool.
