Elizabeth 1st Hammered Shilling, Error?

paratrend New Member Ireland 16 Posts	Posted 12/02/2010 1:13 pm Hi, since my last post (spanish reales find) I have become a little hooked on coins, especially hammered uk ones and use ebay as my main source. A neighbour had this coin for years, I recently purchased it, I have a couple of Elizabeth 1st shillings, but this one appears to have EIZABETH or ETIZABETH, could it be a die error? are these common? The shape of letters on hammered coins sometimes is a bit goofy, but I think I see a definite "L" As a comparison I'm including another shilling from the same (2nd) issue with "L" not well defined either. You can date QE1 shillings by mintmarks. Your coin has a cross, the other example has a martlet, both point to the 2nd issue, 1560-61. Report this Post to the Staff
