1923 Peace Dollar-- Machine Doubling On The 3 ?

roach Valued Member United States 364 Posts	Posted 01/20/2012 9:31 pm I recently got several Peace dollars and I found three interesting coins, which I will post different threads for so as to not confuse. This particular coin is a 1923 with some weird doubling of the 3 in the date. I suspsect it is Machine Doubling. Opinions? It also has some damage to the rim but it is more of a cut than a bump or bruise. the denitcals arent smooshed flat and there is no distortion on the rim, just a chunk missing. roach Valued Member United States 364 Posts	Posted 01/21/2012 5:06 pm Sorry , you are correct, reeding. It just seems so large to be strick doubling. Add to that the fact that nothing else is doubled that way and there is not a uniform size of the doubling, in other words inside the upper loop there is a small amount whereas the lower left has a large spread. I have never heard of any Peace dollars with this much spread. Report this Post to the Staff

VAMsforMoney Valued Member United States 220 Posts	Posted 02/02/2012 9:21 pm Since the dates were punched into the Master Die in the Peace dollar series, it cannot be doubling from a logo punch. If it was doubling during hubbing, other features would exhibit the wild doubling also. The flat, shelf-like appearance is a pointer for strike or ejection doubling.
