I've been offered a very nice Probus at what I think is a slightly high price, but tolerable. The seller has offered this coin for $48 and I'd like to know what everyone here thinks. It is a RIC 202 thunderbolt:
Silvered AE Antoninianus. Rome mint, 275-276 AD. IMP PROBVS AVG, radiate mantled bust left holding eagle-tipped sceptre / SOLI INVICTO, Sol in galloping quadriga left, R-thunderbolt-B in ex.
Its certainly a nice coin, well stamped and centred etc, lots of eye appeal. Not sure as to its specific rarity so difficult to comment on the price. At $48 I'd probably pass but I'm no expert on these and price is always a major factor for me.
What I would say is the price is probably lower than you would have to pay for one of these in this quality from the non-auction sites like vcoins and Forum Anciient Coins etc.
I've sent you a PM BTW - something that may or may not interest you.
It is a very nice coin, with lots of eye appeal. IMO $48 is a little high, but with the way prices have been for a coin as nice as this you should expect to pay more. If you like it, I say go for it.
The coin is flatly struck on a very broad flan and has nice surfaces. I prefer coins like this to rough or partial legend coins. Rome mint is not the easiest to find either so I'd say the coin is fair at the price - no bargain but no rip off either. Enjoy it.
Hi it's a very nice coin,I'm sure here in Italy sellers would ask more....for example I pay the aurelianus antoninianus you have seen on my last topic 30 euro today nearly 41 $ so I would take it immediately.
Thanks for all the input. I was able to negotiate the price down to $45 and half the shipping costs, so now it is mine. I agreed to purchase late last night. Now I can't wait to have it in hand.
