Excellent R6! Clean strike & (aside from a minute bit of verdi) damage free.

Well, my Christmas present to myself arrived yesterday... Frank Smith F-165FR-4I. It sits in a place of honor in my collection as the rarest CWT I currently own

Attractive token. The 9 in the address looks doubled.

ExoGuy,
Yes, the 9 in the address is doubled... and the reverse die is rotated almost 90 degrees. Two neat features that I really like about it

To my experience, the rotations are a fairly common phenomenon. That doubled 9 is stark though.

I posted a new topic to get more answers on this token I found at the bottom of a box with a bunch of coins in it. Then I found this topic. I got some information a year ago when I described it but I didn't see it until last night. Many thanks for the Fuld number of 481/485 and a R-9? Not sure what all that means or if this token has any value. It is not in the best of condition. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the CCF, Bridget360. I'm on the road and don't have my reference materials along.
This was listed as a Civil War token, but it may have been delisted, due to the 1844 date. Perhaps, another CCF member has the new Bowers' catalog handy as a reference? I seem to recollect that, given the anchor image, your token may have originated in Rhode Island. I've seen a few uncirculated specimens sell at auction over the years. Yours appears to have modest wear. I'd guess it would fetch in excess of $500 with a top auction house like Hayden or Levine runs. Cool token to find, as you did!

Quote: An R-9 rarity means that only 2 - 4 are known to exist.
True, but do consider that today's R-9 can be tomorrow's R-8. The rarity scales are getting revised, more accurate, as time passes. There was a Wisconsin saloon piece, Racek, that was rated at R-8. Years later, a hoard surfaced that was all in miny or near mint condition. Granted, such events are very rare, but small numbers, undocumented, are continually entering the overall population as time passes.

Very true on the R scales changing with time. It's not a perfect system.

Lots of great new tokens here everyone! I don't post here often, but I look all the time. Here's my newest. I looked for quite some time to find a nice Fuld die 173 (paired with 272) token. Even though it's rated R1 like the 174/272 token, it's a great deal harder to find a choice example of the 173/272. The biggest thing that sets it apart from the 174 is the large "1863" date on this 173 die.
