Carbon On Lincoln Cents...what Causes It? Can You Preserve

I know that I shouldn't attempt doing anything to it as it would just ruin a great coin. I made a post in the grading section here https://goccf.com/t/114558 My question is what causes this and is there a way to insure this doesn't happen to other coins. I bought a Whitmans Album and this was one of the coins in it. I thought an album would prevent this kind of occurrence. Here is a 1960 Small Date I was looking at. timsumrall Pillar of the Community United States 1256 Posts	Posted 04/02/2012 12:44 pm Carbon spots are from something being on the cent prior to storage. The album didn't do it nor could it prevent it from happening. Like a finger print it is etched into the copper over time. While you might be able to tone it down and stop it from getting worse, the damage is done. The 1960 seller doctors cents. It does look like a removed spot. Look at his wheat cents and you'll see they are the same color. What are the odds? Report this Post to the Staff

Exposure to ANYTHING organic can result in one. They cannot be properly conserved, the surface under them is permanently stained/damaged. Lincoln Cent Lover!
