If you use heat, chemicals are pulled from the air, and you probably quench it in water, which is also a chemical. Report this Post to the Staff

Not entirely true. Many, many people use an gas oven and/or even the top burners to tone coins. Some lay coins out in the sun, changes in temperature and the air does the rest. And as noted some use a Propane, Butane and even Alcohol burners to tone coins. In a way your correct since it does take an ouside source, such as even moisture in the air, to tone coins. The gas from a stove too is sort of a chemical used to tone a coin. Most of the ones shown in your link to those toned coins do have that torchy appearance. They just happen to be chemicals (such as oxygen) that are floating around in the air. Their reaction with the coin metal is accelerated by the heat; the heat itself does not cause the color change.
