I'm working on a 7070 as well, I still have many many holes to fill. My plan is to buy coins that I know I am not going to want to upgrade. I think it will save more time and money if I am not constantly buying coins and then selling them to upgrade. May take a while to finish but I think it is most economical.

i have not thought about which direction.

i get side-tracked when I look at the book and see blemishes. I also see a lot of empty holes but I feel overwhelmed that the prices to obtain a lot of the empty holes will cost a lot more than what I have budgeted. for me, $50 is more or less what I am working with right now.

and $50 seems will only get me F-VG coins in most of the empty holes.

as for upgrades. the 1909VDB, some nickles in AU to MS seem to be had for around $50 no problem. I know I can get some sweet MS65+ modern stuff, but that is just me being anal.

more suggestions are welcomed!

Remember that it is the journey, not the destination, that will give the most pleasure. Filling a 7070 takes time. My budget is similar to yours. Probably why I have not actually started with my own yet. When I see all the empty holes, I will want to fill them and I can't do it too fast. But if you have not replaced all of the holed coins, then you might want to do these first.

If I was doing the buying, I would get into the older classic coinage in mid grades. The silver sell off, I believe, still has the numismatic market down.

The tuffer coins in mid grades are cheap right now, in my opinion. That's where I see most bang for the buck.

I hope your set is coming along.
I focus on one coin at a time, search all the sites (ebay, heritage, etc), go to the local coin shop (what little they are worth these days), and go to local coin show until I find the best one for my budget. This is what brings me true satisfaction in collecting.

I agree with some of the others, start by getting rid of the holy coins!!

Good luck hunting.
