To me, the toning seems a bit unusual. I wonder what can create this pattern. Otherwise, it appears to be a AU-55. Not an easy coin to get when you start approaching MS grades.

Looks like someone bled on it. I would say AU55 as well. I have one of these 1884-S Morgans in a fire safe box in a box somewhere in my garage from many years ago.

Weekend scavenger hunt idea!

Boy oh boy, the 1884-S is always a rough coin to grade because of their general lousy strike. I'm going out on a limb and say MS60 with reservations...Still a nice coin to own!
Rest in Peace

I'm going to say they gave it an AU58. Ever so close!

If it were a common date it would probably be MS61/62.

Tough coin in upper AU grades and insane in MS.
I'm guessing PCGS gave it AU53.
Very nice 84-S!

Also, from what I'm seeing this is a MS coin. My reservations were in regards to MS60, 61, or 62. It cannot be given an AU grade if it hasn't been circulated and that would be easy to tell in hand. . .But, I've been wrong before that's for sure.

Aw crap, I'm intrigued with your specimen, I love this date because of the AU-MS price spread and the difficulty with determining AU/BU coins of this date. I don't beleive there are any records of BU Rolls or Bags of this date found back in the 1950's, 60's or 70's, correct me if I'm wrong. I own two 1884-S specimens one is approximately AU53 the other is AU55 or so and both are Raw as I refuse to slab my own raw coins. Your coin has somewhat of a soft strike so it's hard to determine if you've got deep pockets or not. I guess that's enough of my rant. Nice coin!

Luster seems consistent with an AU coin. I would think it is technically AU-55 but may have been market graded AU-53 due to the red splotches

I would guess AU-50 to be on the conservative side (because of the red spots)

Looks like AU-55 to me. With those gray-ish areas of rub in the fields it would not be an MS candidate.

AU 55 - I wonder if the blood is from a wild west gun fight? Do you think PCGS would have given it a details grade because of the cowboy blood?
