As a former life long resident of Massachusetts, I always am on the look out for a nice Massachusetts coin - real or counterfeit. I spotted this interesting piece and put in a snipe bid.

I thought the final results were INTERESTING to say the least.

My question is - Does anyone recognise this coin as something worth in excess of $3,000?

If not did two snipers simply get caught in a high stakes gamble that one lost BIG TIME?

I don't know how much one of those coins is worth, so I can't answer your question about what happened.

I am chuckling at Bidder 4, though. The last time I retracted a bid, the final selling price was many times my retracted amount too.

If genuine, $3k for a Pine Tree Shilling of that grade is a little high but not totally out of line. A similar example went for $3450 last month at Heritage.

I doubt the winner can go wrong with that return policy.

Furthermore, the seller's feedback is superb - 5k unique transactions, many repeat buyers, and no Negatives or Mutual Withdrawls, ever.

However, the buyer raised an alarm with me. The successful bidder has not had a transaction, or even a bid, on ebay since 2003. That's a real red flag, and I felt strongly enough about the possibility of a scam that I contacted the seller concerning it.

When I looked at the bids, I was particularly taken by the spread. Two bidders at $3500 - and the third down at under $300. The 10x spread seems too big. Looked to me like two snipers wanted to place "Buy Bids" and they just took a risk with a big overbid. One was just far more anxious than the other.

Any comments on authenticity? I saw it as a possible contemporary counterfeit.
