Went to a preview today at an auction. The nicest 1830 Bust half is there but has been cleaned and is in 8 and probably 12 condition otherwise. How much does this really hurt the value of this coin? I am really interest in purchasing it but want to know where the limits are.
Please help. Jim

Jim,
I asked a very similar question on this forum a month or two back. The general consensus was a coin that old that has been cleaned is probably going to have a lot more eye appeal than one that hasn't been cleaned. I have no qualms about buying older cleaned coins provided they look good and are fairly priced.

TS, thanks for the help. I will not get stupid but if this coin is reasonable, it is mine.

This might not be a popular statement, but I feel probably up too 75% of the raw coins out there have been dipped or lightly cleaned at sometime. If you know that the coin has been cleaned going in and you want the coin and get it for a fair price, then I say go for it if it makes you happy.I have a number of them that have been cleaned and I enjoy them just as much as the ones that aren't.
I personally don't care for the ones that have been wizzed or harshly cleaned.

Maybe unpopular, but definitely true. There are some issues where an "odd" looking coin is the one with original skin.

when I first started getting back into coins, one of the biggest issues seemed to be cleaning. Subsequently, I started studying what cleaned coins looked like. In short order, I started realizing that the vast majority of Morgans I was looking at were in some form or fashion cleaned or dipped. Amazingly, it did not seem to bother the price. I have to admit that I am torn between being a purest and realizing that a heck of a lot of coins have been treated. Where the line is I do no know, but seems to be getting blurrier all the time. Thx for the help. Jim

Thx for your input, guys. I took the bust half out of the 2 x 2 and got a better look at it. I really think the coin was wizzed, but well done. It did not stop it though, it sold for $170.00 with buyers premium to a dealer. Goes to show you, I just don't get it yet.

When you said, "8 and probably 12 condition," were you referring to G8 and F12? I was curious, as $170 is stupid money for an 1830 in those grades when you can find VF's all day for well under $100. For $170 I'd expect a top XF or maybe AU coin, depending on die pair.

Correct, Dave. It was probably a lot closer to F-12. I don't understand it either. Guess it had to be auction fever!?
