I'm baffled with a nickel I found with what I assume is just paint on obverse, rim, and, 10% reverse(....the weird thing is acetone did NOTHING to remove it, which is normally the case...ANY enamel or other paint comes RIGHT off in an instant, with acetone).
I cannot accept the "migrating atomic" theory, as that I believe is only for post 1982-zinc coins...and, since it weighs spot on, at 4.99 grams, it's not punched on a cent planchet......but, why no removal with acetone will baffle me to my grave.......there is wear on top of hair, and, all of neck/chest, to rim....I guess my final statement is the FINENESS of the granular aspect of the "toning"...it is microscopic and at a molecular level, IMHO. Maybe a chemical dip/reaction is my only scientific hunch..there is no pitting, associated with a phosphoric acid dip I have seen, and done myself on Buffalo nickles, to expose date...smooth all over is the weirdness factor.

Reminds me of found coin patina. In the earth for a few years with all the minerals and stuff. Looks like it's been in circulation for a while since finding.

just saying.

That is a head scratcher. I do not have much experience with nickels so I will be watching for the more knowing to give their opinions!

I'm not sure what is on the coin but IMO it's PMD.
