1987-D Silver Colored Penny.acid? - Coin Community Forum

monika Pillar of the Community United States 746 Posts	Posted 06/02/2012 1:35 pm I found this 1987D silver colored penny.It weighs 2.50gr. Could this one been dipped in acid?Just wondering,since it has the right weight for a zink penny.I always heard if dipped in acid,the coin will weigh less. monika Pillar of the Community United States 746 Posts	Posted 06/02/2012 4:20 pm for futur references,are there telltale signes on a acid dipped coin?I do have a few more coins that are very discolored.Including a few dimes that looks like copper.But have a few tiny silver colored spots.I haven't posted any of those yet. Kman Pillar of the Community Canada 933 Posts	Posted 06/02/2012 9:50 pm Yes there is, any LMC from 1983 and on including some 82's are made of zinc and then plated. when dipped in acid the plating is removed leaving a "dull" orange peal potmarked silver looking coin. A true silver coloured errored planchet would still be shiny with no orange peal pot marks. As for the dimes feel free to start a new thread and post some pics everyone is here to help and learn.
