I am looking at purchasing a loupe for collecting. I have a budget of $40.
Which brand and power would you recommend?

For general use a 10x and for error and variety searching a 14x. A triplet is best and if it's a Hastings that's even better. I use a 14x doublet and it works for me and it cost less then $12. Bausch & Lomb is very good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bausch-Lomb...em4845405ce4

I like having a 10x and 14x, I use the 10 for general inspection and switch to 14 when I need a really good look.

14X? 20X?

Yikes! I have only been using a 10X...and yeah, I am searching for varieties.

I guess I had better upgrade soon.

It's no wonder I haven't ever spotted a variety.

the only reason I got the 20x is because it was already in the set... would not suggest this for coins exactly

I picked up one on ebay few years back, brand new for $20
He had 2 for Buy-it-Now and wish I had got both, they list price for $90
15x is prefect for searching varieties
Many coin dealers have made comments on what a great Loupe it is while checking out their coins!

stud722 okay, good to know, but I think I will upgrade to at least 14X as the loupes are less expensive that a lot of coins I've been looking at. Also, my 57 year-old eyes probably will not be improving. LOL
Rest in Peace

Penny4Me I went and checked out that site -- wandered around until I found the digital video microscopes....

Definitely gotta upgrade.
