Wow. I guess once you get into examples that are "highest graded" in population reports, the collectors' desire (or perceived rarity) drives the price rather than its listed value. What I am curious to know is will pricing publications like Trends begin to reflect these changes rather quickly, or are these auction values so isolated that they won't affect average value much?

nothing like an auction to create true market value.

Crazy! I just pulled a small beads pointed 5 out of some uncirculated rolls. I'm sure its not MS66 but heck might be worth a sale if I can garner that kind of cash!

@LaureateBust...apparently ebay sales are not and never have been a factor for Trends. They only use Coin Auctions and Dealer sales records.

These were ICCS coins sold by a major Canadian dealer, they will be considered by the Trends editors.

Can someone explain why a dealer selling on ebay can have a effect on trends however I regular "joe" sales mean nothing and do nothing for Trends

I was told by Bret Evans of CCN that ebay sales are not a factor when it comes to Trends!

For many common coins, ebay is the real market now. Trends is published by CCN, which I would guess, gets half or more of its revenues from dealer ads. This is about the politics of not wanting to upset the applecart of artificially high catalogue/Trends prices that dealers rely upon to, in some cases, fleece retail investors.

Sean Isaacs is the Trends Editor now, and yes, he does pay attention to ebay. But like any auction, you have to consider the bidding wars of a top coins with a grain of salt. the same thing happened 5 years ago with a 1982 Coinage Constitution Dollar, graded ICCS MS-64 - it got into a bidding war, Trends was adjusted, and not a single one has sold since then anywhere near the "Trends" price. Also, with top coins, that have killer eye appeal (or in the case of bronze coins, are 100% red) - Trends is irrelevant. Ultimately, someone wants the coin and they have their price as to what to pay for it....

Good discussion. It's neat to understand a little bit more about market value, how it affects sales, and when it doesn't.

I don't disagree with your points SPP. But I think that the policy of ignoring ebay sales is now anachronistic.

Neither of these coins is listed in Trends at MS66,it should stay that way.Elizabeth small cents are the only series that appear regularly in Trends with prices shown for most in MS66 grades. The rest max out at 63-65.Even though there are more small cents graded at this level,we could get along fine without their bi-weekly appearance.
PS As a rule of thumb MS66 seem to go for about 4-5 times the price of their MS65 counterparts. With the LB.P5 currently at $300 in MS65 its sale price isn't unexpected, and may even be on the low side since it is solo finest.

Well, here is a case in pont on nice copper going well above trends. The coin looks beasutiful in the photo. It went for more than I thought it would get. I should have tried to buy it before the auction ended! http://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...E:LNLK:MEWAX
