I decided, at about 11 or 12 on a Friday night, to look through my assortment of 1k pennies and separate the 40s and 50s from the teens, twenties, and thirties. On the way, I filled some more holes in my books. Also on the way, I found a penny that I could not determine the year of. I was at the stage of tiredness where every coin you look at appears to be a double die from eye blurriness. Anyway, I looked at this penny, and all you know for sure was that it is a "191_". Being that tired, I wasn't thinking straight either, so I figured it could be a 1914, and the mintmark looked like a D to me. At that moment, I couldn't remember that the 1914d was worth anything more than normal, as I was about ready to crash. I've taken a few pictures, but don't believe that it is a 1914d anymore. I'll upload two pics now, and try to get a few more tomorrow.

Also, in this state, would it have any value as a key date (which it isn't)? Also, is there a way to find the year of the penny by having some machine sense where the metal has been stressed?

Do a Rubbing of the surface it should show up.. (ie. place piece of tissue paper one the coin and rub it with some graphite) I dont think you could do any damage to if if you are careful.

Sorry, the "I dont think you could do any damage" part made me laugh.
To me, from the pictures, it looks like a 1918 S in the first picture. The Scratch in the 2nd almost forces you to want to think 1912

Wierd, the top photo looks like 1918-S or 1912-S to me, the bottom looks more like 1942-S. I compared them to some of my lincolns from the teens and 40's, and the second photo shows some characteristics very strongly of the 40's ones with the elongated 9 and the top of the 4 appearing taller than the 9. In the first photo though I dont see that, it looks more like a 1 and does not appear any taller than the 9 which is consistant with my 1918's and 1912's. *shrug*

I am going to say a 1912-S, but I would have to see more views at different angles, with different lighting.

it looks like a 1912 or a 1942 s. there is a liquid that makes the numbers on the coins pop up from what I have heard in the past. as far as it being true I do not know. but you may want to search online for it.
